Move forward with the assumption if you can. That is the only way to get the loan out of your name. Of course, your ex will have to cooperate, and the bank will have to approve it. That probably won’t fix the impact it has already had on your credit. But moving forward, if the loan is taken out of your name, any future non-payments by him should not affect you once you are no longer liable on the loan.
