What Does It Mean That Washington Is An At-Will Employment State?

You may be wondering if Washington being an at-will employment state affects you.

In general, an employee or an employer can terminate the employment relationship without notice, and without cause. There are some exceptions to this general rule, including that a covered employer cannot terminate an employee based on the individual’s race, color, religion, disability, age (if over 40), and certain other protected categories.

This general rule does not apply if there is an employment contract or Collective Bargaining Agreement that provides otherwise.
